Reducing the emission of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) remains a key focus across the globe as highlighted by the UK government’s clean air strategy which sets out ambitious targets to cut emissions of air pollution by half by 2030.
This follows research from the industry which highlights the significant rise of VOC emissions in the home due to aerosols, and the wider implications this increase is having on both the environment and health of consumers.
This is the reason Salvalco remains committed to providing environmentally friendly aerosol solutions that deliver great results. A key contributor to VOC emissions is the propane / butane (LPG) propellant. Currently the market relies heavily on their use because of the lack of alternative viable options that can deliver consumer acceptable high-quality spray performance throughout the life of the can. That was however until the launch of the Eco-Valve technology.
An effective alternative to traditional valves, Eco-Valve is helping to reduce and eliminate VOC emissions by removing the need for LPG, enabling aerosols to be powered by compressed inert gases such as nitrogen or fresh air. The added bonus being that it has comparable spray performance to aerosols powered with LPG, which no other aerosol valve has been able to create.
New bulk formulations – a ‘total’ zero VOC solution
But it doesn’t stop there for Salvalco who remain committed to not only developing their own aerosol technology but going one step further by collaborating with formulators to create a ‘total’ zero VOC solution for the market that combines the actuator technology in the can with environmentally friendly formulas too. A demand that is increasingly being driven by consumers themselves who are not just wanting more sustainable packaging solutions but also natural product formulations that are better for them and the environment.
It’s why the business has been working on the strategic partnership with contract filler Cosmosol. Together this has involved the development and industrialisation of a completely sustainable aerosol system using compressed inert gas propellant. So far this has led to the development of four different antiperspirant deodorant (APD zero VOC) new bulk formulations. With hair spray and body lotion under development too, it is an exciting achievement given there is currently nothing comparable in the market offering such a high performing ‘total’ solution.
Paolo Sebastiano Ramella who is responsible for Business Development at Cosmosol and who has had close involvement in the project explains.
“Thanks to the use of the innovative valve patented by Salvalco (Eco-Valve), we are able to replace traditional liquid gases such as butane and propane with compressed air or nitrogen, thus eliminating VOC emissions in the atmosphere and therefore reducing the environmental impact. Using Eco-Valve, it is therefore possible to create completely sustainable, non-flammable aerosol formulations with 100% natural components.”
Eco Valve V’s LPG – The research is favourable
Whilst the distinct environmental benefit of Eco-Valve in reducing VOCs is clear, the question remains as to whether consumers will accept the performance of the inert gas aerosol solution over LPG? Thankfully, recent independent European research tells us they do with over 84% of the 600 people interviewed stating they would buy the tested product over their current LPG propelled one. And with 87% of people saying they thought the Eco-Valve spray compared favourably, and in many cases much better than standard LPG propellants, it paints a promising picture for a more sustainable future for the industry.
Peter Shaw, Managing Director, Salvalco said.
“With the rise of VOCs becoming an increasingly prevalent topic across the aerosol industry, we are delighted to be able to offer a highly effective solution to the market that consumers love just as much and in some cases more than traditional LPG valves. Reducing harmful emissions significantly, whilst still maintaining the same great product performance, Eco-Valve is versatile, cost effective and can be used in over 85% of aerosol applications too.
Working collaboratively with partners across the industry is something we take a lot of pride in, helping us to innovate further and create more holistic solutions for the market. As consumers are becoming more discerning about what they want and with the demand for more sustainable options, we are delighted to be able to bring a completely new solution to the market. That solution is Eco-Valve – the future of aerosol technology today.”
